Class 1 - Unicorn

unicorn sheild.jpg

Class Unicorn is our reception and year one class and the teacher in Class Unicorn is Mrs Castell.

This is my fourth year working at Berriew CP School, but my first year with my own class! I qualified as a teacher in 2020 and have been working at Berriew as a teaching assistant and teacher covering PPA ever since. I have taught all of the year groups over the last four years and have gained a vast amount of experience, however I have a real passion for early years.

In Unicorn Class, we aim to provide a happy, caring and stimulating environment for children to learn. All children will experience a wealth of activities and opportunities through which they will grow socially, intellectually, physically and emotionally. During their time with us, we aim to encourage the children to become ambitious and capable learners, who are confident in exploring the world around them. As part of our creative curriculum, we provide varied learning experiences all based around our topic which changes every term. We pay close attention to numeracy and literacy and we love to learn through play using adult led and child initiated experiences throughout the day. We have a large outside learning environment, which we use all through the year, no matter what the weather is doing!

We are very fortunate to have a on site Pre-School which many children attend before beginning their school journey at Berriew School.

What we have been doing...

We have started our new topic for the spring term, 'Light and Dark'. We have begun by looking at the sun and the children have all had a go at writing their own acrostic poem! We have also been busy with phonics and numeracy, using our indoor and outdoor areas. We've got lots of exciting activities to look forward to this term, but we particularly can't wait to explore nocturnal animals, where we will be looking at habitats and the wildlife we have in our local area!
